QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's Norm Roberts will join several other coaches from the collegiate ranks at the NYC Coaches for Hurricane Katrina Relief Clinic on Saturday, October 8 at St. Raymond's High School in the Bronx.
Speakers at the coaches clinic include Hofstra's Tom Pecora (10 a.m.), NC State's Herb Sendek (11:20 a.m.), Roberts at 3 p.m., Fordham's Derek Whittenberg (4:20 p.m.) and Columbia's Joe Jones (5:35 p.m.).
Coaches who wish to attend the clinic can make a donation of $50 to either Catholic Charities or The American Red Cross. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. at St. Raymond's.
Roberts' participation in the clinic is one of several outreach efforts made by the Red Storm basketball team to aid those affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
The Red Storm basketball team helped raise nearly $600 in items donated to the All Coaches Care Online Auction (allcoachescare.com). St. John's donated four floor seats to St. John's Jan. 17 matchup with BIG EAST newcomer Louisville at Madison Square Garden, which was acquired by a fan after 24 bids for $480.
The squad also donated a 2005-06 autographed team basketball, which was purchased after 23 bids for $107.50.
In addition to these efforts, members of the St. John's basketball team and staff made up packages of winter coats, work-out clothing and practice gear and donated them to the University of New Orleans, which was hit hard by the hurricanes last month.
