QUEENS, N.Y. - The Red Storm women's volleyball team defeated the Pittsburgh Panthers 3-0 (30-18, 30-27 and 30-21) Saturday evening at Carnesecca Arena on the Queens campus. The victory is the first in the series for the Red Storm since 2001, and marks the 20th three game sweep this season. St. John's improves to 23-8 overall, 9-5 in the BIG EAST as Pittsburgh falls to 16-11 overall, 9-5 in the conference.
Hui Ping Huang (The Republic of China) and Patti Hardiman (Honolulu, Hawaii) pick up their seventh and eighth double-doubles of the season, respectively. Huang recorded 12 kills and 20 digs, while Hardiman scored 11 kills and 18 digs. Casie Brooks (Victorville, Calif.) notched 29 assists, while Anicia Wood (Wotton Terrace, Barbados) put up four total blocks.
St. John's began the game with an 8-0 run bringing the score to 10-2. The Red Storm continued to control to board with kills from Shameka Mitchell (Lakeland, Fla.). Pittsburgh fought hard to close the gap but was unable to do so. Huang brought the Red Storm to a 10 point lead at 28-18. The Red Storm took the game 30-18 off an attacking error from the Panthers.
Game two started in a similar fashion with St. John's taking a 3-1 lead in the opening minutes of play. The Panthers tied the score four times but could not grab the advantage. Tied last at nine, St. John's went on a 6-0 run on serves from Kathleen Yee (Honolulu, Hawaii). The Panthers came within one at 25-24 on an attacking error from St. John's, but LaToya Blunt (Vacaville, Calif.) and Hardiman slammed two kills each to give St. John's the 30-27 win.
Pittsburgh came back after the break taking the first two points of the third game. However, St. John's answered quickly taking control of the board once again on kills from Hardiman. The Red Storm jumped to a 12 point lead at 25-13 with efforts from Blunt, Mitchell and Caitlin Rimgaila (Trooper, Pa.). The Panthers tried to stop the Red Storm crossing the 20 point mark with kills from Andreyko and Stephanie Ross but it wasn't enough to suppress the Storm as it closed the game 30-21 on a Panther service error.
Pittsburgh was lead by Andreyko who recorded 11 kills. Nicole Taurence notched 17 assists while Megan McGrane had 25 digs.
The Red Storm returns to action on Friday, Nov. 18 in the first round of the BIG EAST Tournament. Opponent and game time will be announced Monday, Nov. 14.
