Huang Named BIG EAST Rookie of the Week

QUEENS, N.Y. - Freshman outside hitter Hui Ping Huang received her second conference honor when the BIG EAST announced its Rookie of the Week this Monday. The honor comes on the heels of two victories for the Red Storm.
Huang was instrumental in leading St. John's to sweeps against conference foes West Virginia and Pittsburgh last week. The freshman from China, who earned the BIG EAST Player of the Week award on Oct. 10, posted double-doubles in both matches with 16 kills and 14 digs against WVU and 12 kills and 20 digs against Pitt. On the week she had 4.67 kills per game while hitting .339 and averaged 5.67 digs per game.
Huang has played in 101 games for the Red Storm this season and has recorded eight double-doubles. She recorded a career high 25 kills against Notre Dame on Oct. 8 and a career high 20digs this past weekend against Pittsburgh. She leads the team with a .341 hitting percentage with 348 kills. She is third on the team in service aces with 36 and in digs with 251. In the BIG EAST, Huang is ranked fifth overall in kills with 214 over 50 conference games. She is also fourth with a .367 hitting percentage.
The Red Storm finished the regular season with an overall record of 23-8, 9-5 in the BIG EAST. Huang and the Red Storm return to action on Friday, Nov. 18 against the Bearcats of Cincinnati in the first round of the BIG EAST Tournament in Louisville, Ky. First serve is at 10 a.m.
