QUEENS, N.Y. - Hui Ping Huang (The Republic of China) was named Northeast Freshman of the Year by the American Volleyball Coaches Association on Wednesday, Nov. 7. She also received an All-Northeast Region team honorable mention.
The freshman outside hitter has been a driving force behind the Red Storm this season, helping it produce one of the best turnarounds in program history. The women's volleyball team went from a 15-16 overall, 1-9 in the BIG EAST mark in 2004 to an impressive 23-9, 9-5 finish in 2005.
Huang played in 105 games this year and recorded eight double-doubles. She posted career highs with 25 kills against Notre Dame on Oct. 8 and 20 digs against Pittsburgh on Nov. 12. Huang leads St. John's with a .330 hitting percentage with 367 kills. She also sits third on the team in service aces with 37 and in digs with 260.
In the BIG EAST, Huang received several honors this season. On Nov. 17, she was named to the All-conference First Team for her diligent efforts in helping the program to a conference tournament berth, its first since 1996. Huang was also named Rookie of the Week on Nov. 14 and received the league's Player of the Week award on October 10. She finished the year fifth in the league in hitting with a .330 percentage.
