Friday, August 12, 2005, Cape Cod, MA- The Eastern College Athletic Conference selected St. John's men's soccer captain, Matt Groenwald (Prospect, IL) as the 2004-05 ECAC Robbins-Scholar Athlete Award winner for Division I. Groenwald will be honored during the ECAC Convention at the Honors Dinner on Sunday, September 25.
The award honors outstanding student-athletes who represent ECAC schools for their work both on and off the field. It is given to one male and one female from Division I, II and III. The winners are chosen by three committees, which consist of athletic administrators. Votes are based on achievement in academics, athletics and community service.
Groenwald's achievements can be seen both on and off the field. He finished his last collegiate academic career with a 3.83 grade-point average in biology, and earned his bachelor's degree in December 2004. Last season, the midfielder was among the final 15 for the Missouri Athletic Club's Hermann Trophy, the award given to the top men's soccer player in the country, as he helped the Red Storm to their 13th straight NCAA Tournament appearance and 12-6-4 record. He finished the season with three goals and six assists.
Groenwald was also an active member of the St. John's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and aided in the organization of a fundraiser, which brought in more than $30,000 for a friend's uncle in need of a heart transplant. This past spring, Groenwald represented St. John's at the annual NCAA Leadership Conference in Lake Buena Vista, FL.
This isn't the first award for Groenwald. He was the 2004 CoSIDA Academic All-American of the Year in men's soccer, selected to the BIG EAST First Team and to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America First Team.
Groenwald began his master's degree in January and will return for his final season of eligibility this fall.
