QUEENS, N.Y. - Red Storm co-captain Lamont Hamilton (Brooklyn, N.Y.) was named second team All-Met by the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association with the unveiling of the group's award winners on Wednesday. Hamilton's second team selection marks the second-straight season where the St. John's forward has received the honor.
Hamilton joins the St. John's coaching staffs, women's team members Angela Clark and Kia Wright, and women's coach Kim Barnes Arico, at the 73rd NIT/MBWA Awards Dinner at Giants Stadium on Wednesday. Clark and Wright were named to the first team on the women's side, while Barnes Arico takes home Metropolitan Co-Coach of the Year honors.
Hamilton averaged a team-best 12.6 points, 7.6 rebounds and 1.1 blocks per game for the Red Storm. Hamilton's 7.6 rebounds per game average tied for seventh among all BIG EAST players, and helped St. John's to finish the season ranked third in the conference and eighth in the nation on the boards.
Hamilton recorded three of his team-leading seven double-doubles in the last five games, helping St. John's secure key conference victories at Rutgers (Feb. 15) and over Seton Hall (Feb. 21) at Madison Square Garden. Hamilton led the Red Storm with 19 games of double-figure scoring, including five-straight outings in double-digits to close out the season.
A BIG EAST honorable mention selection, Hamilton was rewarded with a BIG EAST Honor Roll mention and a MBWA Honor Roll citation on Jan. 23 for his pair of impact performances in the victories over No. 17/15 Louisville and No. 9/9 Pitt. He tied a career-high with 24 points against undefeated No. 9/9 Pitt (Jan 21), scoring four critical points in the final :31.8 of the game to help lift the Red Storm to the win. Against No. 17/15 Louisville on Jan. 17, Hamilton scored 11 of his 15 total points in the second half, and added five rebounds, to help St. John's to the first of two huge home wins.
