On Wright: One of the most dynamic guards in the BIG EAST and the country ... explosive off the dribble and in the open court ... an intelligent, court-savvy point guard with tremendous defensive tenacity ... named a tri-captain for 2006-07.
Coach Barnes Arico On Wright: 'Kia had some nagging injuries last year so my staff and I are excited to see her get back to her top form. She is obviously very talented and can do multiple things. We want her to continue to take on a leadership role on the team as she works towards becoming one of the best point guards in the country.'
As A Junior In 2006-07: Led the BIG EAST in assists per game (5.5) despite playing in 22 of the Red Storm[apos]s 30 games due to an preseason injury ... named to the All-BIG EAST second team and the All-Met (Metropolitan Basketball Writer[apos]s Association) first team ... ranked second on the Red Storm in scoring (14.0 points per game) while averaging 4.7 rebounds and 1.9 steals per game ... posted double digits in the scoring column 15 times and scored more than 20 points on four occasions ... set new career-highs in rebounds (16), assists (10) and minutes (40) ... scored her 1,000th-career point and begins her final season as No. 10 on St. John[apos]s all-time scoring chart (1,181 career points) ... a unanimous All-BIG EAST preseason selection ... exploded offensively and scored 25 points against Clemson (Nov. 24) and the University of Maine[apos]s Thanksgiving tournament ... helped the Red Storm to its first victory of the season against Brown (Nov. 25) and set a new career by dishing out 10 assists against the Bears ... had back-to-back double-digit scoring efforts against Stony Brook (Dec. 30) and Rutgers (Jan. 2) ... netted 17 points and handed out seven assists against the Seawolves, then followed up that performance with a 16-point, six-assist effort against the Scarlet Knights ... had her best all-around game of the year against No. 21 Pittsburgh (Jan. 13) to give St. John[apos]s the win over the Panthers ... poured in 23 points while adding 10 assists ... notched her 1,000th-career point against former school and fifth-ranked UConn on Jan. 21 at Madison Square Garden ... grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds at Villanova (Jan. 27) and had 15 points for a double-double ... ended the regular-season with a string of six-straight games of scoring at least 14 points ... had 22 points against Cincinnati (Feb. 17), 14 points and seven assists at Louisville (Feb. 20) and 23 points and six rebounds against Marquette (Feb. 26) ... played in her third-straight BIG EAST Tournament vs. Louisville (March 3), scoring nine points.
As A Sophomore In 2005-06: Earned first team All-BIG EAST honors and was a first team All-Met selection by the MBWA ... a BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year candidate ... appeared in all 30 games for the Red Storm, starting 29 ... ranked first on the team and 11th in the league by averaging 14.8 points per game ... also appeared in the conference[apos]s top 10 for steals (2.5 spg; 2nd), assists (4.5 apg; T-5th) and free throw percentage (.852; 3rd) ... one of 37 players invited to try out for USA Basketball[apos]s Under-20 Team in Colorado Springs, Colo. .. selected to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team ... a two-time Weekly Honor Roll selection by the league ... exploded offensively at the NCAA Tournament, scoring 26 points against California (March 19) and 23 points against Maryland (March 21) ... also contributed five assists and two steals against the Bears ... tied a career-high in that game with 10 field goals vs. Cal ... had a stellar performance against eventual national champion Maryland, dishing out nine assists in addition to her 23 points.
As A Redshirt Freshman In 2004-05: Exploded onto the conference scene in her debut season with the Red Storm and was named a second team All-BIG EAST selection ... earned first team All-Met recognition by the MWBA ... named Most Valuable Player of the St. Bonaventure Shootout ... started all 29 games that she played in ... led the team in minutes (32.6 per game) ... ranked first on the team and third in the conference by averaging 14.8 poings per game ... was also tops on the squad for assists (115) and steals (68) ... led all scorers with 21 points in St. John[apos]s first-round victory over Seton Hall (March 5) at the conference tournament ... had a stellar game in the second round of the postseason WNIT at West Virginia, pouring in 24 points.
As A Freshman In 2003-04: Sat out season to fulfill NCAA transfer requirements after transferring from the University of Connecticut.
Before St. John[apos]s: Finished her Copiague High School career as the fifth all-time leading scorer in Long Island history with 2,148 points ... named the 2002 Suffolk County Player of the Year ... a four-time All-Long Island first team selection ... averaged 24.4 points, 9.3 rebounds, 5.5 assists and 6.3 steals per game ... led Copiague to its first Suffolk Class A and Long Island Championship in 2002 ... attended the adidas Top 10 Camp and the USA Basketball Development Festival ... AAU Team, the Long Island Wave, captured the 1999 national championship ... one of two New Yorkers selected to participate in the USA Junior Olympics in Colorado.
