For just the third time this season, St. John's was outrebounded (46-30) by the opposition. Entering the day's contest, the Red Storm held a +6.2 margin. St. John's is 9-3 when winning the battle of the boards.
St. John's scored six unanswered points and held Miami scoreless for the opening 4:49 of the second half to close to within 38-34 with 15:11 to play.
Freshmen guards Quincy Roberts and TyShwan Edmondson combined to score 22 points on 7-of-18 shooting from the floor. The duo added five assists.
In his first career start, Roberts scored a career-high 14 points and added a career-high nine rebounds. Roberts also tied a career-high with three assists.
Edmondson, meanwhile, added a career-high with eight points and tied a career-mark with two assists. Playing a career-high 20 minutes, Edmondson also made a career-high two steals.
For the tenth-straight game Paris Horne reached double-figures with a 13-point effort. Horne tallied six points to lead a 8-0 St. John's run late in the first half. Horne was 6-of-12 from the floor, marking the fifth time this season that the sophomore shot at least 50.0 percent. Horne is shooting 45.0 percent on the year.
The Red Storm held Miami to just 30.3 (10-of-33) percent shooting in the second half.
Wearing a protective facemask in his first action since missing two-straight games, Justin Burrell finished with 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting and added two rebounds. Burrell gave St. John's an early 3-0 lead with his third 3-pointer of the season.
Sean Evans finished with five points and six rebounds. Averaging 6.3 rebounds per game, Evans has grabbed at least six boards in eight games this year.
