QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's men's soccer alum Chris Wingert helped Real Salt Lake defeat the Los Angeles Galaxy in the 2009 MLS Cup held Sunday night at Qwest Field in Seattle, Wash. After playing to a 1-1 draw through regulation and overtime, RSL won its first MLS Cup with a 5-4 victory in the penalty kick shootout.
"Chris had an outstanding career at St. John's and we are very proud of what he continues to accomplish in the professional ranks," said head coach Dr. Dave Masur. "Chris and his family have remained very involved with the St. John's soccer family."
Wingert played the entire 120 minutes in the match, solidifying a defensive unit that limited the opportunities for Galaxy stars Landon Donovan and David Beckham. Wingert then converted in the sixth round of the penalty kick shootout.
The 2003 M.A.C. Hermann Trophy winner, Wingert was a two-time first team All-American at St. John's and helped the Red Storm reach the College Cup in 2001 and 2003.
