Gustafsson Named To NSCAA All-Northeast Region Third Team

QUEENS, N.Y. - Senior Joel Gustafsson has been named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-Northeast Region third team as announced by the organization. The defender is a two-time NSCAA All-Northeast Region selection, garnering first team honors in 2008 when he was also a second team NSCAA All-American.
Gustafsson played in 21 games in 2009, including 20 starts, and tallied one assist. The central defender helped anchor a defensive unit that posted 11 shutouts and allowed just 11 goals in 21 games for a 0.48 goals against average.
The defender earned All-BIG EAST honors this past season for the third-straight year with his selection to the second team. Gustafsson was the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year and a first team selection in 2008, and was an honorable mention in 2007.
The 2009 St. John's men's soccer team finished 9-3-9, reached the NCAA Tournament for the 17th time and won its conference-record eighth BIG EAST Tournament title.
