QUEENS, N.Y. - The BIG EAST Conference named two St. John's student-athletes, seniors Rory Quinn of the men's soccer team and Casie Brooks of the volleyball team, recipients of the 2008-09 BIG EAST Institutional Scholar-Athlete of the Year Awards.
Each year, St. John's nominates one male and one female student-athlete who are graduating seniors and intend to pursue graduate or professional studies. Nominees represent a "blend of academic achievements as well as athletic achievements," and strong consideration is given to candidates with at least a 3.0 GPA. The two will be awarded $2,000 from the BIG EAST Conference to be used toward their graduate tuition.
A two-time team captain, Quinn helped lead the 2008 men's soccer team to the NCAA College Cup, a 19-3-3 record and a BIG EAST Regular Season Championship. The defensive midfielder played in 22 games, drawing 15 starts, and finished with one assist in 1,536 minutes of action. Quinn earned BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week honors on Sept. 8 and was also named an ESPN The Magazine second team academic all-district selection.
A psychology major, Quinn has compiled a 3.68 GPA through the fall 2008 semester and is expected to graduate in May 2009.
Brooks, a four-year starter for the volleyball team, was an important part of three-consecutive BIG EAST Regular Season Championships and one conference tournament title. She was a member of the 2007 Red Storm team that reached the regional semifinal round of 16 in the NCAA Tournament, a program first. The Victorville, Calif., native finished her career appearing in the St. John's all-time record book in three categories - sixth in assists (1,428) and service aces (117) and eighth in digs (938).
A senior majoring in elementary education with a concentration in psychology, Brooks currently boasts a 3.17 GPA in the St. John's School of Education. She will graduate after the fall 2009 semester.
