QUEENS, N.Y. - The 2009-10 academic and athletic calendars kicked off on Monday with the "Tailgate `09" event held at Carnesecca Plaza in front of Carnesecca Arena and Taffner Field House.
The event, sponsored by the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), Red Zone School Spirit group, Student Government Inc., and Greek Life, included free barbeque and drinks as well as live music from the St. John's pep band and a DJ. The Red Storm cheerleaders and dance teams also performed at the event.
Members of SAAC from many of the Red Storm varsity teams were on hand as hosts, working the various stations.
"We planned this event to be a fun opportunity for all new students, especially our student-athletes," said Lucy Pesce, Director of Leadership Development for Student-Athletes and one of the event's coordinators. "It's a great way to socialize in a relaxed setting and to get excited about the 2009-10 Red Storm teams."
Along with the performances and free food, students were given 2009-10 Red Storm t-shirts and encouraged to sign up for specially priced season ticket plans for the various St. John's home games.
The Red Storm will kick off its 2009 home schedule this weekend as the volleyball team hosts Boston College on Friday at 8 p.m. as part of the St. John's Classic. The women's soccer team hosts New Hampshire on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
