Miami (Ohio) Sweeps St. John's, 3-0

OXFORD, Ohio - The St. John's volleyball team came close in the first set against Miami (Ohio), but the Red Storm wasn't able to overcome the RedHawks as it was swept, 3-0, in the Miami Best Western Invitational in Oxford, Ohio on Friday night.
The Red Storm (4-5) was over come by a Miami (2-5) team hungry for just its second win of the season. Junior Diana Banya led the team with a .316 hitting percentage against the RedHawks, while freshman Gabriela Petkova tallied three service aces, the most by a Red Storm player this season.
Down 9-4 in the first set, Banya and Darlene Ramdin pushed the Red Storm into a 17-17 tie with six points coming from the two. The RedHawks then had the game-point opportunity robbed by a solo block from Jordan Haskins to make it 24-21. A kill by Ramdin and an ace by Petkova were the final points for STJ as a net error gave the RedHawks the set, 25-23.
The Red Storm avenged a 15-8 Miami lead with six consecutive points from Haskins, Ramdin and Banya in the second stanza. STJ got within two again after a block, 18-16, but Miami scored another, only to be countered by a kill from Kun Song, keeping St. John's in it. Miami would score six of the next seven to win the second set, 25-18.
The RedHawks flew to an early 5-1 advantage it would not relinquish, leading by as many as 10 in the third set. Miami took the final set, 25-15 and the match, 3-0.
Banya led the Red Storm with nine kills, while Ramdin tallied eight. Petkova finished with 30 assists.
Megan Griffin led the RedHawks with 11 kills and teammate Maria Leahy had 10 kills.
St. John's continues play in the Miami Best Western Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 12 with matches against Pacific at 11:30 a.m. and Troy at 3 p.m.
