ITHACA, N.Y. - The St. John's volleyball team came back in the third set against Colgate after facing a two-set deficit before falling in the fourth set for a 3-1 Raider win in the final round of the Cornell Invitational in Ithaca, N.Y. on Saturday in the nightcap.
The Red Storm (6-9) was led by Darlene Ramdin, who tallied 25 kills, a game-high, and hit .311 for the match. Colgate (3-7) had three players with double-digit kills.
After scoring seven consecutive points to gain a 19-16 lead, the Red Storm was upset by Colgate in the first set, 25-23. STJ led at 22-20 and 23-22, but the Raiders beat the Red Storm to game point to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
With five straight points, the Raiders had earned an 18-12 lead in the second set, propelling them to a 24-16 advantage. The Red Storm would score two final points on a Ramdin kill and a solo block from Kun Song before Colgate won the set, 25-18.
A kill form Jordan Haskins and a service ace from Ashley Asing gave St. John's a 16-9 lead it would not relinquish, claiming the third set, 25-15, after back-to-back kills from Song to send the match to extras.
In a race to the finish. Colgate beat the Red Storm to game-point after tying the score eight times after the 15-point mark. The Red Storm led by as many as six early in the match. The Raiders defeated the Red Storm, 28-26, in the fourth set to win the match, 3-1.
Ramdin led two Red Storm players in double-figures with 25 kills, while Song tallied 19, a season-high. Diana Banya added nine kills for STJ. Asing finished with 17 digs, while Kayla Motoyama recorded 10 digs in her second double-digit performance this season.
The Red Storm resume non-conference action as it hosts Long Island on Tuesday, Sept. 22 in Taffner Field House. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
