St. John's Defeats Quinnipiac, Fordham

QUEENS, N.Y. - Ending on a high note, the St. John's volleyball team downed Quinnipiac (0-3) and Fordham (2-4) to finish the STJ Classic on Saturday. The Red Storm (3-4) swept Quinnipiac, 3-0, before edging Fordham, 3-1.
Against Quinnipiac, STJ went down 17-13, but launched a comeback mid-set to tie it at 19 in the first stanza. The Red Storm took a 23-20 lead, but a pair of errors got the Bobcats within one. A kill from Ramdin and an error would give STJ the first set, 25-22.
Trading points, neither squad was able to gain an advantage until STJ earned a 14-10 lead. It was quickly diminished with three points from the Bobcats. The Red Storm surged again with kills from Ramdin, Ruisa Scheffel and Jordan Haskins as part of an 11-3 run to capture the set, 25-16.
The Red Storm jumped to a 6-0 lead to open the third set before the Bobcats scored six points to make it 9-3. Leading 14-10, STJ scored eight of the next 12 points for a 22-14 advantage. Despite a late, four-point run by the Bobcats that brought them with four, 24-20, the Red Storm stuck it out for game-point to earn the win, 25-20.
Ramdin and Kun Song both registered 11 kills against Quinnipiac, while Gabriela Petkova notched 35 assists.
In its second match of the day, the Red Storm downed Fordham 3-1. STJ held a two-set advantage and stood on the verge of game-point in the third set before the Rams snagged their only set of the match to send the contest to a fourth set.
STJ took the first set, 25-20 to top off the lead it held since a tie at 5-5. The Red Storm was up just one point, 20-19, heading into the final stretch, but scored five of the next six points, three coming from errors, to earn the win in the first set.
Neither team led by more than two following the 4-1 advantage that STJ earned to open the set. Song got the kill to knot the score at 25. A Fordham error followed and Song sealed the win in the second set with a kill for a score of 27-25.
The Rams owned a 5-2 lead to begin the stanza, but the Red Storm quickly recovered to tie the score at the sixth, seventh and eighth points. On top at 21-19, the Red Storm lead dwindled with a pair of errors. Fordham tied it again at 24 and took a 25-24 lead with a kill from Kailee May. A Ram attack was touched on its way out of bounds, handing Fordham the third set, 26-24.
The score was tied 17 times in the fourth set between the Rams and the Red Storm. St. John's led 10-6 after an attack error, but the Rams returned to tie it at 12. The two exchanged points, tying 10 times to send the set to extra points. A kill by Scheffel knotted the score at 29 before a kill from the Rams balanced the score. Fordham followed with an attack error, but quickly recovered with another kill for a tie at 30. Sara Friede gained the next point for the Rams, but kills by Song and Ramdin brought home the match for STJ with a score of 33-31.
Ramdin tallied a game-high 25 kills against the Rams, while Petkova had 55 assists. Ashley Asing recorded 21 digs, and Song and Kayla Motoyama added 16 and 11 digs, respectively.
STJ returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 8 when it hosts Siena for Camper Reunion Day. First serve is set for 7 p.m. in Taffner Field House.
