QUEENS, N.Y. - After leading St. John's (6-0) to three wins in the second annual Big Ten-BIG EAST Challenge, sophomore Joe Panik has been named the BIG EAST Baseball Player of the Week. This is the shortstop's first-career Player of the Week honor.
Panik batted .625 (5-for-8) with one double, one triple, two RBI and a team-best four runs scored as the Red Storm defeated Minnesota, Michigan and Illinois. The shortstop also slugged a team-best 1.000 and reached base 10 times en route to posting a team-high .769 on-base percentage.
In the 5-4 win against Minnesota, Panik scored what proved to be the winning run in the top of the ninth inning. The sophomore then had the game-winning RBI double in a 2-1 win against Michigan. Panik reached bases four times in four plate appearances against Illinois and scored the go-ahead run in a 6-4 win.
The 6-0 start for the Red Storm is tied for the best in the Ed Blankmeyer Era. The 2008 squad also started 6-0 en route to a school-record 42 wins.
St. John's returns to action with a three-game set at East Tennessee State beginning on March 5.
