Volleyball Sweeps Fordham To Remain Unbeaten At Home

QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's volleyball team swept Fordham, 3-0, on Tuesday night in Carnesecca Arena. With the win, the Red Storm improves to 11-3 on the season, including a 7-0 mark at home. St. John's improved its all-time record against Fordham to 15-1.
The Red Storm (11-3) hit .317 as a team and held the Rams (6-6) to a -.041 attacking percentage. Junior transfer Brunna Kronbauer led the team with eight kills and hit .375 for the match. Classmate and captain Darlene Ramdin recorded six kills and notched a team-high seven blocks (four solo, three assisted). STJ recorded 12 total team blocks.
With an Anzelika Lukjanska kill, the Red Storm jumped out to a 4-1 lead over Fordham early in the first set. The Rams cut the deficit to one point, 5-4, but quickly found themselves in a big hole as St. John's went on a 14-4 run to take a commanding 19-8 lead. Lukjanska and Kronbauer each recorded two kills during the run, as St. John's would go on to win the first set, 25-13.
The Red Storm carried its momentum into the second stanza, taking a 6-1 lead over the Rams. St. John's benefited from Fordham's second set struggles as the Rams committed nine attacking errors allowing St. John's to win the set, 25-12, and take a 2-0 advantage in the match.
With the help of five service aces, the St. John's stormed to a commanding 18-4 lead over the Rams final set. Lukjanska and Kronbauer each recorded three aces during the match, bringing Kronbauer's season total to a team-high 21. Down 23-9 in the set, the Rams went on a 5-0 run to cut the deficit to 23-14. However, a Fordham error and an Alyssa Bennett kill gave STJ its 11th win of the season as the Red Storm would sweep the Rams 3-0 (25-13, 25-12, 25-15).
Sophomore setter Gabriela Petkova tallied a team-high 18 assists in the match, while freshman libero Korina Yee added nine digs.
St. John's returns to action when it travels to State College, Pa. to compete in the Rockvale Outlets Classic from Sept. 17-18. The Red Storm will have matchups against Princeton, George Washington and host institution No. 2 Penn State.
