QUEENS, N.Y. - After leading the Red Storm volleyball team to its first BIG EAST Conference win at Villanova, senior middle hitter Darlene Ramdin has been named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll, as announced by the conference office on Monday afternoon.
Ramdin paced St. John's (10-15, 1-7) to a straight-set victory over the Wildcats (14-9, 6-3) with 17 kills and led the match with a .353 attacking percentage. She also tied a match high with six blocks, including two solo rejections. On Friday, the Red Storm captain led STJ with 11 kills and seven blocks at Georgetown. Ramdin currently leads the team in kills (284), kills per set (3.12), blocks (91), blocks per set (1.0) and total points (348.5). She also ranks ninth in the BIG EAST in points per set (3.83) and 10th in blocks per frame. The award is the second of the season for the Red Storm, as senior outside hitter Brunna Kronbauer earned the same honor on Aug. 29.
A communication arts major, Ramdin is also one of 10 national finalists for the prestigious Lowe's Senior CLASS Award. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. Fans are encouraged to vote on the organization's website and Facebook fan page through Nov. 21. Fan votes will be combined with media and Division I head coaches' votes to determine the winner, which will be announced during the 2011 NCAA DI Women's Volleyball Championship from Dec. 15-17.
The Red Storm returns home for the first two of four-straight BIG EAST matches when it welcomes DePaul (Oct. 28) and Notre Dame (Oct. 30) to Carnesecca Arena. The matches are slated for 7 p.m. and 2 p.m. starts, respectively.
