Panik Garners Third Team Capital One Academic All-America Selection

QUEENS, N.Y. - Already a first team Academic All-District honoree, Joe Panik has earned third team Capital One Academic All-America accolades as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Panik is the first St. John's player to earn Academic All-America honors since both George Brown and Jeff Grantham in 2008.
A Finance major with a 3.78 GPA, Panik leads the team in average (.402), runs (59), home runs (9), slugging percentage (.645) and on-base percentage (.513). The shortstop earned first team All-BIG EAST honors after finishing the regular season ranked in the top ten in the BIG EAST in nearly every offensive category, including average (tied for first), on-base percentage (first), slugging percentage (second), runs (tied for second), total bases (tied for second), RBI (fourth), walks (tied for fourth), home runs (tied for fifth), doubles (tied for seventh) and stolen bases (eighth).
After leading the Red Storm to the finals of the BIG EAST Championship, Panik was named to the BIG EAST All-Tournament Team for the second-straight year. The junior batted .471 (8-for-17) with two doubles, three RBI, four stolen bases and a .583 on-base percentage.
An at-large selection into the NCAA Tournament, St. John's (35-20) opens play against East Carolina at 6 p.m. on June 3.
