QUEENS, N.Y - Freshman Karin Palgutova garnered her third conference weekly award of the season by being named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for her play against Seton Hall and Rutgers. During the weekend, Palgutova established new career match-highs in kills, digs, and blocks, while collecting her team-leading fifth and sixth double-doubles of the year.
In a 3-1 win over Seton Hall, Palgutova racked up new career-highs in three categories: kills, blocks, and digs. The Slovakian recorded 20 kills, 14 digs, and nine blocks - narrowly missing her first-career triple-double. Her nine blocks are the highest total by a St. John's player this season.
Just two days later, Palgutova topped her season-high for kills by recording 22 in a five-set loss to Rutgers. The 22 kills are the most by a St. John's player in a match this year. In addition, she collected 10 digs for her team-leading sixth double-double of the year. The freshman also recorded three service aces to up her 2012 total to 46, which is tied for the fourth-most service aces in a season in St. John's history.
During the weekend, Palgutova led St. John's in kills (4.67 per set) and blocks (1.11 per set), while recording the second-most service aces (0.33 per set) and the third-most digs (2.67 per set).
This season, Palgutova has been named Freshman of the Week once and has made two BIG EAST Weekly Honor Rolls. She is one of just two freshmen in the conference to make the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll twice and to receive three BIG EAST weekly awards - Erin Fairs of USF is the other.
