QUEENS, N.Y. - On Oct. 3, Student Development for Athletes held a Faculty Coach Reception at Belson Suite in Belson Stadium. The reception was an opportunity for student-athletes to talk with faculty members outside of the classroom and watch the 12/16 St. John's men's soccer team take on Villanova.
This year's reception featured opening remarks by the Student Athlete Advisory Committee's Co-Presidents Rikka Lovely and Stephanie Barnes, seniors on the track & field team. Lovelace and Barnes spoke on the unique balance of being a student-athlete and the importance of faculty support. Sean Hagan and Robert Case, seniors on the baseball team, were presented with the BIG EAST Team Sports Excellence Award. Dillon Ayers, senior captain of the lacrosse team, received the BIG EAST Sports Excellence Award on behalf of his squad.
The Faculty Coach events were reintroduced by the Student Development for Athletes department in the fall of 2005 as a way for the university's faculty to develop a better understanding of the student-athlete experience. Events include the Faculty Coach Reception each semester and the Faculty Coach for a Day Program.
As a participant in the Faculty Coach for the Day program, faculty members served as a coach during a men's or women's basketball home game. As the Faculty Coach for the Day, faculty members participated in all of the pregame activities including the team shoot-around, pregame meal, watching game film, greeting guests in the hospitality room before tip-off, sitting with the team on the bench and attending the post-game press conference. Each college was invited to recommend three members of their respective faculty to serve as Faculty coaches.
Through these events and other efforts, Student Development for Athletes hopes to continue to build relationships between the Faculty and Student-Athletes.
