Karin Palgutova Named To All-BIG EAST First Team

MILWAUKEE, Wis. - Freshman Karin Palgutova was named to the All-BIG EAST First Team on Thursday, Nov. 15 at the conference awards banquet in Milwaukee, Wis., becoming the first St. John's volleyball player to receive the honor since the 2008 season. Palgutova, who led the conference and was eighth in the nation with a 0.48 service aces per set average, was the only freshman to make the All-BIG EAST First Team.
Palgutova was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week once and made the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll twice during the season. She recorded 53 service aces in 2012, which is the second-most in a season in St. John's history and just seven shy of the single-season record. The Slovakian also compiled the eighth-most kills per set in the BIG EAST with a 3.33 average.
Senior Gabriela Petkova, junior Kerri Johnson, and sophomores Morgan Thomas, Yana Vavdiyuk and Aleksandra Wachowicz were also honored at the conference awards banquet for being BIG EAST Academic All-Stars.

On Friday, Nov. 16, the St. John's volleyball team will play in its first BIG EAST Tournament match since the 2008 season, taking on No. 10 Louisville in the quarterfinals at 1:30 p.m. at the Al McGuire Center in Milwaukee, Wis. This will be the second time this season that eighth-seeded St. John's (20-11, 7-8) and top-seeded Louisville (25-3, 14-1) will meet. On Oct. 12, the Cardinals edged the Red Storm, 3-2, at Taffner Field House in Queens, N.Y. Every quarterfinal and semifinal match will be streamed live on www.bigeast.tv. The Championship match will be broadcast live on ESPNU on Nov. 18 at 2 p.m. ET.
