QUEENS, N.Y. - After helping lead St. John's to a 4-1 week, including a series win at Villanova to open BIG EAST play, Matt Wessinger has been named to the BIG EAST weekly honor roll. The selection marks the second-straight week that the Red Storm has placed a player on the honor roll as Sean O'Hare made the list for the previous week.
Wessinger led the Red Storm in nearly every offensive category, posting a team-high .450 (9-for-20) batting average with one double, a team-best three home runs and a team-leading 10 RBI. The shortstop led the team with a .950 slugging percentage and also posted a team-high .560 on-base percentage. Wessinger scored eight runs, tying him for the team lead, and also stole a team-best four bases in four attempts.
The senior homered in three-straight games during the week, including a three-run, go-ahead blast against LIU (March 21), a three-run homer at Villanova (March 23) and a solo blast in game one of a doubleheader at Villanova (March 24). Wessinger, who finished a triple shy of the cycle in game one of the doubleheader as part of a four-hit day, totaled three multi-hit performances as well as a trio of three-RBI games.
Wessinger leads the BIG EAST with 20 stolen bases, a total that also ranks third in the country. The shortstop also ranks 10th in the league in batting average (.371), ninth in both slugging (.596) and on-base percentage (.472), tied for third in home runs (4) and tied for sixth in runs scored (23).
St. John's (13-10) returns to action and opens a four-game homestand with a 3 p.m. contest against Maryland on March 28.
