QUEENS, N.Y. - Despite out-hitting the Hoyas, .231-.174, and out-blocking them, 18.0-11.0, St. John's lost, 3-2 (25-18, 22-25, 25-18, 22-25, 10-15), on Friday night in Carnesecca Arena. With its first home loss of the season, St. John's falls to 12-8 overall and 1-3 in BIG EAST play. For the Hoyas (7-10, 1-3 BIG EAST), this was their first conference win of the season and their second in the past two seasons.
With a 2-1 lead in the match, St. John's found itself trailing Georgetown, 22-20, in the fourth set. A kill by junior Aleksandra Wachowicz and a block by sophomores Amy Zimmer and Karin Palgutova tied the score at 22-22, but a Red Storm service error on the following play put the Hoyas back up by point. Georgetown then capped off the set with two additional unanswered points on a service ace and a St. John's attack error.
The Hoyas drew first blood in the fifth set and proceeded to take a 9-6 lead, resulting in a St. John's timeout. Boursiquot notched a kill immediately following the timeout, but the Hoyas responded with a kill of their own to take a 10-7 lead. Zimmer answered back with a block solo to narrow the deficit to one point, but Georgetown collected back-to-back kills to take a 12-8 lead, putting the set out of reach.
Zimmer led the match with a career-high nine blocks (two solo), while adding a season-high 10 kills on 15 attempts (.467 percentage). Boursiquot contributed eight kills and six blocks.
Wachowicz had a match-high 25 kills on a .295 hitting percentage with a career-high five blocks (two solo). With 10 kills and a career-high 18 digs, Palgutova recorded her team-best seventh double-double of the season, equaling her total from her freshman season.
Sophomore Deniz Mutlugil had a match-high 58 assists, while adding seven digs. Freshman Mona Karkkainen had the best match of her rookie campaign, recording a career-high 10 kills on a .273 percentage and tying her career-high of five blocks.
Two Hoyas collected double-doubles. Lauren Saar collected had a team-high 18 kills and 19 digs, while Alex Johnson had 17 kills and 11 digs.
Dani White led Georgetown in blocks (6) and Caitlin Brauneis led the squad in assists (55).
