QUEENS, N.Y. -
St. John's Student Development for Athletes held a Faculty Coach Reception in the Belson Suite at Belson Stadium on May 1 as student-athletes had the opportunity to connect with faculty members outside the classroom and watch the St. John's baseball team take on Iona.
This year's reception featured opening remarks by the Student Athlete Advisory Committee's Co-President Rikka Lovely a senior on the track & field team. Lovely spoke on the unique balance of being a student-athlete and the importance of faculty support. Lovely and Sean Hagan, senior on the baseball team, were also presented with the American Eagle BIG EAST Institutional Scholar-Athlete award.
The Faculty Coach events were reintroduced by the Student Development for Athletes department in the fall of 2005 as a way for the university's faculty to develop a better understanding of the student-athlete experience. Events include the Faculty Coach Reception each semester and the Faculty Coach for a Day Program.
As a participant in the Faculty Coach for the Day program, faculty members served as a coach during a men's or women's basketball home game. As the Faculty Coach for the Day, faculty members participated in all of the pregame activities including the team shoot-around, pregame meal, watching game film, greeting guests in the hospitality room before tip-off, sitting with the team on the bench and attending the post-game press conference. Each college was invited to recommend three members of their respective faculty to serve as Faculty coaches.
Through these events and other efforts, Student Development for Athletes has continued to build relationships between the Faculty and Student-Athletes.
