HAMILTON, N.Y. - After a pair of wins on Friday afternoon to open the season, the St. John's Volleyball team was unable to contain host Colgate University, dropping three consecutive sets to the Raiders on Saturday to round out the 2013 Colgate Classic.
The Red Storm opened the match with a pair of kills by Amy Zimmer to take the early 2-0 advantage, but the Raiders responded right back to tie the set 6-6 before rallying on a 19-8 run to take the 1-0 lead in the match.
Looking to tie it up, the Red Storm came out with more intensity in the second set, keeping Colgate tied 11-11 before the Raiders were able to extend out to a six point lead as they went on to a 25-20 second set victory.
Unfortunately for the Red Storm, that would be as close as the match would get as Colgate claimed the final set 25-15 to seal the 3-0 victory.
Karin Palgutova led the Red Storm offense with 11 kills, the only St. John's member to score double-digit kills in the match. Deniz Mutlugil recorded 24 assists and seven digs on the day while Shawna-Lei Santos finished with 15 digs in the back row.
With the loss, the Red Storm move to 2-1 on the season as they return home to host Siena in the Taffner Field House on Monday at 1:00 p.m.
