St. Johns Volleyball Tops Army To Open 2014 Season

SMITHFIELD, R.I. - The St. John's volleyball team earned its first victory of the season in a hard fought match Friday afternoon against Army, 3-1 (25-12, 16-25, 25-10, 25-23) at the 2014 Bryant Hampton Inn-vitational.

"It was a gutsy win against a very organized, disciplined and great fit Army team," said head coach Joanne Persico. "I'm really proud of our ladies and we had great leadership on the court."

The Red Storm (1-0) opened the season off attacking, taking the first set before dropping the second to the Black Knights (0-1). St. John's would then dominate the third set before getting into an intense fourth set that was close throughout. The Red Storm was down most of the set but continued to push through on its way to a 25-23 final set victory.

Junior Karin Palgutova finished with a double-double for the Red Storm, posting 13 kills and 16 digs while recording an ace and hitting .303 in the win. Senior Aleksandra Wachowicz finished with 14 kills and a hitting percentage of .355. Juniors Deniz Mutlugil and Shawna-Lei Santos recorded 39 assists and 14 digs, respectively.

St. John's will round out the final day of the Bryant Hampton Inn-vitational on Saturday against UMass-Lowell at 2 p.m. before concluding the weekend against host-school Bryant at 6 p.m.
