QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's improved to 4-0 on the season with a sweep over Saint Peter's (0-1) in the 2014 home opener on Monday afternoon in Taffner Field House. The Red Storm used a superior attacking percentage (.353 to -.078) and out-blocked the Peacocks (10 to 2) in the straight-set win (25-9, 25-19, 25-11). Junior Karin Palgutova led the attack, recording a match-high 16 kills on an impressive .500 hitting percentage, while adding six digs and an assist.
Juniors Deniz Mutlugil and Shawna-Lei Santos led the match in assists and digs, respectively. Mutlugil dished out 20 assists, an ace and a kill, while Santos collected 12 digs, four assists and a team-high two service aces.

After jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the match, St. John's had to sustain a Saint Peter's rally early in the second set. With the scored tied 11-11 in the second, the Red Storm would go on a 7-0 run to take a commanding lead; causing Saint Peter's to call a timeout. St. John's was never threatened as they closed out the set behind freshman Delaney D'Amore back-to-back service aces, followed by a kill by Palgutova to take the set. The third set was not close as the Peacocks struggled to score over the Red Storm middle blockers.
St. John's now owns an 8-1 all-time record against the Peacocks and a 6-0 all-time record when playing them at home. Saint Peter's has not defeated the Red Storm since Nov. 2, 1999.
