SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - St. John's saw its three-match winning streak snapped as the Red Storm fell short of a comeback victory on the road against Seton Hall. The Red Storm lost 3-1 (15-25, 2517, 20-25, 25-27) to the Pirates inside of Walsh Gymnasium Friday night.
Seton Hall (13-16, 7-10 BIG EAST) rallied to defeat St. John's (18-14, 8-9 BIG EAST) after the Red Storm tied the match at 1-1 behind the strong play of seniors Karin Palgutova, Yaidy Santiago and Shawna-Lei Santos.
Palgutova recorded her 14th double-double on the season with 13 kills and 15 digs, while Santiago continued her impressive play with her fifth double-double of the year with 14 kills and 17 digs. Santos orchestrated the offense and finished with 38 assists and nine digs.
Sophomores Julia Cast and Delaney D'Amore each did their part to help keep the Red Storm in the match. Cast was again efficient as she tallied nine kills (.348) on 23 attacks with only one error. The New York native also had a presence at the net as she finished with six blocks. D'Amore led the defense with 20 digs, while also dishing out seven assists and one service ace.
After falling 25-15 in the first set, St. John's would retaliate with a convincing 25-17 win to even the score at 1-1 heading into the intermission.
The third set was close as the Red Storm got within three (23-20) late after an attack error by Amanda Hansen. However, the Pirates responded with back-to-back kills from Cherise Hennigan and Hansen to give them the set and a 2-1 lead in the match.
The fourth frame was just as tight as both teams would go back-and-forth. Santos served up Mona Karkkainen for a kill that gave the Red Storm a 25-24 lead, but the Pirates would pick up two more kills to take the lead. Seton Hall edged St. John's, 27-25 to win the match after an error by the Red Storm on the ensuing play.
