QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's freshman Federico Mussini (Reggio Emilia, Italy) was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Monday after averaging a team-high 14.0 points per game in a pair of wins over Syracuse and Niagara. Mussini's week was highlighted by a 17 point and three assist performance Sunday in an 84-72 victory over the Orange at Madison Square Garden. He is the second St. John's player to receive a BIG EAST weekly award this season joining Yankuba Sima (Girona, Spain) who was named the league's Freshman of the Week on Nov. 23.
Mussini shot 47.4 percent (9-19) from the field and 50.0 percent (7-14) from 3-point territory during the Red Storm's 2-0 week. The 6-foot-1 guard from Italy led St. John's (7-3) in scoring in both contests, beginning with 11 points in Wednesday's victory over Niagara at Carnesecca Arena. He also grabbed four rebounds and handed out two assists against the Purple Eagles.
On Sunday, Mussini led St. John's in scoring for the eighth time in 10 games en route to a 12-point Red Storm win over Syracuse before 13,473 fans at MSG. He matched a career-high draining five 3-pointers to go with three rebounds and three assists to help the Red Storm win its third-straight game and improve to 6-0 at home.
Mussini is the only freshman in the BIG EAST to lead his team in both scoring and assists. He is tied for 11th in the conference with 14.3 points per game and has averaged 2.8 assists in 10 starts. His 24 3-pointers are also the fourth most in the BIG EAST this season.
St. John's looks for its fourth-straight win on Friday when the squad hosts Incarnate Word at Carnesecca Arena. Game time is set for 7 p.m. with the national telecast airing on FS1.
