BRONX, N.Y. - Forever etched in New York sports lore because of his smooth lefty jump shot, St. John's Head Coach Chris Mullin showed that he could have excelled on the diamond as well, throwing a first-pitch strike at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday afternoon prior to the Yankees' contest against the Kansas City Royals.
A three-time Haggerty Award winner and the consensus national player of the year in 1985, Mullin drew a raucous cheer from the home crowd upon his introduction. The 6-6 lefty then fired his ceremonial first pitch to Yankees catcher Brian McCann.
Mullin's first pitch was not the only part of Wednesday's game honoring St. John's. Before Mullin took the field, Conrado "Bobby" Gempesaw, Ph. D., President, St. John's University accepted a $5,000 donation from Yankees Manager Joe Girardi in honor of Bob Sheppard, the longtime voice of Yankee Stadium and St. John's alumnus who passed away in 2010. Recently, the press box at Jack Kaiser Stadium was dedicated in honor of Mr. Sheppard, who also served as the voice of St. John's for many years.
Several other members of the Red Storm community were present on Wednesday afternoon, including, but not limited to, Director of Athletics Chris Monasch, University General Counsel Joseph Oliva, Associate Head Coach Barry Rohrssen, Assistant Coach Matt Abdelmassih and Women's Basketball Head Coach Joe Tartamella.
