QUEENS, N.Y. -- The St. John's Dance team captured its first National Championship in school history on Sunday as its hip hop routine won the Division I Hip Hop Dance category at the 2016 UCA & UDA College Cheerleading & Dance Team National Championship.
"This team has been incredible from July until now working on skills for this competition," head coach Christine McCarton said. "I cannot explain how proud I am for their drive and determination over the past few weeks during practices. They really are what you would call a dream team. We have wanted to bring this university a championship for many years and finally in 2016 we accomplished it."
St. John's placed first with its routine ahead of Saint Joseph's and the University of Delaware, who finished second and third, respectively at the two-day (Jan. 16-17) event held at the Walt Disney Resort in Orlando, Fla.
"After semi-finals we were in first place and knew that we would need to make adjustments for the final round," McCarton added. "We had an amazing practice last night and we're ready for the finals this morning. The team truly took that stage by storm and exceeded their own expectations and thankfully the judges agreed."
The first place result was the best finish ever for the dance team, surpassing a second place showing at the National Championship in 2011.
