QUEENS, N.Y. - After a pair of exceptional performances against Binghamton and Minnesota, Marcus LoVett has been named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll, it was announced by the league office on Monday afternoon.
Last Monday night against the Bearcats, the Fort Wayne, Ind., native made nine of his 16 shots from the floor, including a 5-for-11 effort from beyond the arc, to finish the contest with 23 points, four rebounds and four assists in 34 minutes of action.
Four days later on the road at Minnesota, LoVett scored 31 points and dished out a team-high five assists in a hard-fought loss for the Red Storm. LoVett's 31-point effort marked the highest single-game total for a St. John's rookie since 2011-12, when Moe Harkless netted 32 against Providence in the team's BIG EAST opener on Dec. 27.
Averaging 24.3 points per game on the season, LoVett is the second-highest scoring freshman in the nation, trailing only Markelle Fultz of Washington at 32.5 points per game. He also ranks in the top 20 overall in the NCAA in points per game.
With 73 points through his first three games of his Red Storm career, LoVett is outpacing a number of St. John's greats in that respect, including the top four scorers in program history. Chris Mullin scored 36 in his first three games in 1981, Malik Sealy tallied 60 in 1988, D'Angelo Harrison netted 43 in 2011 and Felipe Lopez registered 61 in 1994.
LoVett and the Red Storm will next be in action on Wednesday, opening up The Battle 4 Atlantis against No. 13/13 Michigan State at 7 p.m. on AXS TV.
