QUEENS, N.Y. - Just a few days after helping lead the Red Storm to the most lopsided victory by a road team in Carrier Dome history, Shamorie Ponds has been named the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week. The 6-foot-1 guard from Brooklyn led the Johnnies in scoring with his fifth 20-point performance of the season to lift St. John's to a 93-60 win at Syracuse on Wednesday.
Ponds takes home the league's top freshman honor for the second time in three weeks after shining bright on the big stage at the Carrier Dome. The rookie tallied a game-high 21 points against the Orange. A complete player well beyond his years, Ponds also filled up the stat sheet in other ways, recording seven assists and no turnovers while pulling down six boards and swiping four steals.
On the year, Ponds ranks ninth among all players in the BIG EAST with 17.2 points per game and leads the conference in 3-pointers made with 41. Through games played on Dec. 23, Ponds ranks sixth in the NCAA among freshman in points per game.
The Red Storm returns to action on Thursday evening, hosting No. 13/13 Butler in its BIG EAST opener at 7 p.m. inside Carnesecca Arena. The contest against the nationally ranked Bulldogs will also be a "white-out," as all fans in attendance will receive a complimentary St. John's Basketball t-shirt courtesy of Ridgewood Savings Bank.
