QUEENS, N.Y. ââ'¬" Christian Jones (Arlington, Texas) announced Tuesday he will not return to St. John's for the 2016-17 season and will pursue a career in professional basketball. A four-year member of the Red Storm men's basketball program, Jones is on track to earn a bachelor's degree this May and has one year of eligibility remaining if he chooses to return to college as a graduate student.
"It has always been a goal of mine to play professional basketball so I plan to explore all of my opportunities," said Jones. "I am going to work hard over the next month to position myself for the best available option, but I do not intend to sign with an agent. I would like to thank our entire coaching staff and administration for their support through this process."
"We wish Christian much success in his future," said Head Coach Chris Mullin. "We appreciate his contributions to our program and support his decision to move in a new direction."
Jones played in all 32 games and made 19 starts for the Red Storm last season. The 6-foot-7, 230-pound forward averaged 8.4 points on 47.8 percent shooting from the field, recorded 5.2 rebounds per game and had 17 blocks. Jones posted three double-doubles and scored double-figures 13 times, including a career-high 29 points against Marquette in the BIG EAST Tournament.
