QUEENS, N.Y. - A three-year member of the St. John's Women's Basketball team and graduate assistant in the Red Storm Athletic Department, Mallory Jones was recently bestowed with one of the University's most distinct honors, being selected to give the student address at the Peter J. Tobin College of Business Graduate Commencement Ceremony on May 18 in Carnesecca Arena.
Jones began her speech with lighthearted repartee about the nature of graduation ceremonies before delving into a detailed explanation about how a St. John's graduate education has adequately prepared her for the business world, most notably giving her the opportunity to present real business solutions to board members of a well-respected financial institution.
Finally, Jones praised the demographic makeup of the University community, relishing in the fact that she was able to study in a diverse educational environment during times of racial tension on college campuses nationwide, making a point to clarify that she never felt objectified or excluded on the basis of her race.
Jones was a member of the Red Storm from 2011-14, taking part in three NCAA Tournament runs. As a freshman, Jones played in 11 games on a Red Storm squad that advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history. She appeared in a career-high 17 games as a junior in 2013-14, averaging 2.5 points and 1.0 rebounds per contest while helping the Red Storm advance to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament.
After completing her undergraduate study, Jones began a graduate assistantship in athletic administration, performing a variety of functions necessary to the day-to-day operation of the St. John's athletic department.
