NEWARK, N.J. - Taking on the defending BIG EAST Champions on the road, the Red Storm proved unable to overcome a solid shooting performance from Seton Hall, as the Pirates drained 52 percent of their tries from the floor and eight of their 20 chances from three en route to a 86-73 victory at the Prudential Center.
Marcus LoVett led the way for St. John's with 22 points, marking his seventh game this season with 20 or more points. The redshirt freshman from Fort Wayne, Ind., also dished out a team-high four assists.
Bronx native Bashir Ahmed added 19 points and a team-high seven rebounds, while Shamorie Ponds chipped in nine. Ponds' nine-point effort marked only the second time this season that the rookie from Brooklyn failed to reach double-figures, as he had recorded 19-straight games with 10-plus points after scoring eight in his St. John's debut against Bethune-Cookman on Nov. 11.
The Red Storm whittled a 27-point deficit down to just 12 in the closing minutes of the contest, but could not overcome a 31 percent first-half shooting performance from the floor.
Seton Hall won the battle on the boards, collecting 45 rebounds to the Red Storm's 33. Angel Delgado tallied the conference's first 20-20 game since 2010, scoring 21 points and pulling down 20 boards. Jamine Peterson of Providence was the last BIG EAST player to accomplish the feat, doing so with 29 points and 20 rebounds against Rutgers on Jan. 9, 2010.
The two teams went back and forth to start the contest, as the Red Storm jumped ahead, 10-9, on a LoVett layup five minutes into the game.
From there, the Red Storm went cold, missing nine straight field goals as the Pirates unleashed a 15-5 run to move ahead 24-15 seven minutes later.
After the Red Storm cut it to seven, 24-17, less than two minutes later, the Pirates closed the half on a 22-9 run, taking a 20-point edge, 46-26, into the locker room.
At the intermission, Seton Hall held a 30-15 advantage on the boards.
Trailing by as many as 27, 55-28, with three minutes gone in the first half, the Red Storm slowly began to chip into the Seton Hall advantage. LoVett scored six points on an 8-0 St. John's run to make it a 19-point game with 15:16 to play before Ahmed narrowed the deficit to 15, 67-52, on a pair of free throws six and a half minutes later.
St. John's would reduce the Seton Hall advantage to as little as 12 on three occasions down the stretch, but the Pirates hung on for an 86-73 victory.
The Red Storm will play its second-straight road game on Wednesday night, traveling to Providence for a 6:30 p.m. matchup with the Friars on FS1 and 570 AM WMCA.
