ORLANDO - The St. John's Dance team earned first place honors for their game day routine on Sunday and second place in the hip hop portion of the competition at the 2018 UCA & UDA College Cheerleading & Dance Team National Championship.
"I am so incredibly proud of this team for their dedication and hard work this season," head coach Christine McCarton said. The hip hop competition is so tough in our division and they performed even better in finals to capture second place. In the Jazz category, we finished 12th just missing finals by less than a point which was the best this team has done in several years."
This was the first year that the game day portion was introduced to the competition, making the Red Storm the first ever Division I champions in this specific category.
"With UDA introducing the new Game Day category we were able to display what we do on court for our Johnny fans and captured the first ever Game Day National Championship," McCarton said. "This team was overwhelmed at their success this weekend. Every team member was part of this incredible weekend."
In hip-hop, St. John's placed second behind Southeastern Louisiana University. The teams stellar performance put them ahead of Saint Joseph's and North Dakota State University, who finished third and fourth, respectively at the three-day (Jan. 12-14) event held at the Walt Disney Resort in Orlando, Fla.
The Red Storm has now placed in the top-ten for its hip hop routine over the past eight competitions and in the top three in two of their last three contests.
