Red Storm Falls to Marquette in Three Sets

The Red Storm volleyball team fell in straight sets on Sunday to No. 19 Marquette at Carnesecca Arena.
Efrosini Alexakou led the Red Storm with 11 kills and Erica Di Maulo posted her 11th double-double of the season with 25 assists and 10 digs.
Amanda Sanabia led the team with digs on the match, while Nia Diaz continued to hit at a high percentage converting four of her five chances for kills and hitting .800 on the match.
The Red Storm was able to keep it close throughtout the first set using four kills from Alexakou and three from Rachele Rastelli. Rastelli finished the match with nine kills, which was second most on the team. The Johnnies were able to get the match as close as 18-17 before Marquette took the final eight points to take the set 25-17.
The Johnnies also fell in the second set 25-21. St. John's controlled the score through the first part of the frame taking a 13-10 lead before Marquette called a timeout. The Golden Eagles scored six of the next seven points to take a 16-14 lead. The Red Storm would tie the score at 17-17, but Marquette would take eight of the next 12 points to take a 2-0 set lead.
Yanjiao Zhao recorded seven of her nine assists in the second set with Alexakou and Lexie Lobdell leading with four kills each. The senior finished the match with eight kills and nine digs.
Marquette finished the match in the third set winning 25-22. Lobdell hit .364 in the frame converting four of her 11 chances to lead the team. Sheena Yoshioka recorded six of her nine digs in the third frame.
Both teams stayed competitive in the final frame as it went back-and-forth throughout the set. Marquette jumped out to a 16-12 lead before the Red Storm went on a 6-1 run using three kills from Lobdell to take an 18-17 advantage. However, with the score tied at 20-20, the Golden Eagles used a 5-2 run to take the set and the match 3-0.
