Red Storm soccer teams recognized for achievement in the classroom
The St. John's men's and women's soccer programs continued their tradition of academic excellence in 2017-18, as both teams have been honored with the United Soccer Coaches Team Academic Award, it was announced by the organization on Thursday morning.
In order to be eligible for the award, a squad must carry a composite GPA above 3.0 for the entire academic year. The women's team turned in an outstanding 3.76 GPA in 2017-18, good enough for second in all of Division I behind Rice (3.77). The men's team was not far behind their counterparts on the women's side, turning in a team GPA of 3.41.
This marks the 14th time that the men's soccer team has taken home the honor and the 15th occasion on which the women's squad has garnered the accolade. The men's team has claimed the award in nine-straight seasons, while the women's team has done so in 11-consecutive campaigns and 14 of the last 15 overall.
The St. John's soccer programs will play a combined total of four times at Belson Stadium over the next six days, as the women's team kicks off the stretch with a 7 p.m. tilt against Providence tonight on ESPN3. The men's soccer team will host No. 8 Creighton on Saturday night at 7 p.m. before Coach Ian Stone's squad welcomes Butler for a Sunday matinee. Both of those weekend matches will be broadcast on the BIG EAST Digital Network. The men's side will close out non-conference play at Belson Stadium on Tuesday, hosting Princeton for a 7 p.m. contest.
