St. John’s Falls to No. 9 Creighton in Three Sets

The St. John's volleyball team fell to Creighton in three sets on Friday night, snapping a four-match winning streak for the Red Storm.
Amanda Sanabia broke the single-season digs record in the loss, passing the mark Lena Yee set in 2007 with her 595th dig in the second set of the match. The junior finished the match with a team-leading 16. She became the first in program history to reach 600 digs in a season.
Kayley Wood led the Red Storm with nine kills in the effort, while Erica Di Maulo added 26 assists and five digs.
The first set went back and forth throughout with Creighton winning 25-22. The Red Storm hit .324 as a team in the opener with Wood converting five kills and to lead the team. Four Johnnies hit over .300 in the frame, while Di Maulo recorded 14 assists.
With the Red Storm down 18-11, a kill by Efrosini Alexakou sparked a 7-2 run for the Johnnies to drop the deficit to two at 20-18. The freshman finished the match with eight kills and 10 digs. The two teams traded points before St. John's used a Creighton attack error to pull within one at 23-22. After a Bluejay timeout, Creighton took the final two points to take the set.
Sanabia's first dig in the second set gave her sole possession of first in program history in the category. The Johnnies fell 25-12 in the frame, with Jovana Askovic making her St. John's debut in the process. Rachele Rastelli led the way with three kills on five attempts for the Red Storm. The freshman finished with eight kills.
The Johnnies kept it competitive again before falling in the third set 25-22 behind three kills from Alexakou and Wood. Di Maulo and Hanna Wagner added two blocks in the frame each leading the team in the match.
After falling behind 15-9, St. John's came storming back once more taking 10 of the next 14 points to tie the set at 19. The team would get it as close as 23-22 before dropping the next two points to give Creighton the match.
The Red Storm will return to Carnesecca for the final time on Saturday at 5 p.m. to take on Providence for Senior Day. There will also be a celebration for Head Coach Joanne Persico and her 25 years at the helm of the St. John's volleyball program beginning at 3 p.m. in the President's Lounge at Carnesecca.
