Freshman is the first since Karin Palgutova in 2013 to be honored
The American Volleyball Coaches Association released its All-America Teams with freshman Efrosini Alexakou being named an Honorable Mention All-America.
Â
This marks the first time since 2013 that a member of the Red Storm has been selected as an honorable mention, when Karin Palgutova was named after posting 510 kills and 4.36 kills per set during her sophomore season, leading the BIG EAST in both categories.
Â
Alexakou recorded 371 kills on the season to lead the Red Storm despite missing the first seven matches of the season. After her debut on Sept. 4 in a road victory over Stony Brook, a 2018 NCAA Tournament team, the outside hitter became an important piece of the St. John's offense.
Â
The freshman recorded the first of 15 double-doubles in the final match of The Fredonia Hotel/Holiday Inn Express SFA Invitational against Tennessee State, recording 10 kills and 11 digs in the process. Alexakou followed that up by being named the Tournament MVP of the Dog Pound Challenge at UConn.
Â
The Thessaloniki, Greece, native also recorded the fifth highest kills per set average in conference matches at 3.67 in the category, the only freshman in the top five. This led to Alexakou being named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week three times in the 2018 season and BIG EAST Freshman of the Year overall. The outside hitter was also named to the All-BIG EAST First Team.
Â
In a five-set road victory over Xavier, Alexakou set a career high with 29 kills and added 18 digs in the effort.
Â
The Red Storm would finish third in the BIG EAST, making its first BIG EAST Semifinal Match since 2012, and taking the first set against Marquette, with Alexakou recording seven of her 19 kills in the opener. Those 19 kills led the team and also led to Alexakou being named to the BIG EAST All-Tournament Team for her efforts.
Â
The Johnnies saw their season continue into the NIVC, the first postseason tournament for St. John's since 2007. Alexakou finished with 16 kills and 13 digs against College of Charleston in the first round, finishing a historic season for St. John's volleyball that saw the Red Storm produce a record of 23-12, 12-6 in the BIG EAST.
