Kathy Meehan to Receive Distinguished Service Award From MBWA

QUEENS, N.Y. - The Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association (MBWA) will present St. John's University Associate Vice President for Athletics Kathy Meehan with the organization's 2018 Distinguished Service Award. Meehan, who is in her 42nd year of service at her alma mater dating back to her days as a student-athlete, will be joined by fellow Distinguished Service Award honoree Joe Nesci, the winningest coach in New York University history.
The MBWA has been presenting its Distinguished Service Awards since 1994.
"I am honored to receive this prestigious award from the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association," Meehan said. "So many outstanding people have received this award before me. It's humbling to be associated with that distinguished group."
The 85th All-Met Haggerty Awards Dinner will take place on Wednesday, April 25 at the Westchester Marriott in Tarrytown, N.Y. The Haggerty Awards Dinner is the longest-running media-managed college basketball awards program in the United States.
Meehan, a Queens native, has been part of the Red Storm family since 1971 when she began her undergrad journey at St. John's. Meehan earned a bachelor's degree in education in 1975 before earning a master's degree in counselor education in 1979.
A 1991 St. John's Athletics Hall of Fame inductee, Meehan was a member of the first women's basketball team at St. John's (1974-75) and received the athletic department's first Outstanding Female Student-Athlete Award that same year.
Meehan has served as Associate Vice President for Athletics since June 2001, while also serving as the Senior Woman Administrator (SWA). As Associate Vice President for Athletics and Senior Woman Administrator (SWA), Meehan oversees Internal Relations, Title IX compliance, human resources, strategic planning and enforcement of the student-athlete Code of Conduct, She is the sports administrator for the Red Storm women's basketball team, as well as the men's tennis, women's tennis, softball and volleyball programs.
Meehan has represented St. John's on numerous NCAA and BIG EAST committees during her tenure. She is the former chair of the conference's Senior Woman Administrator Committee, a member of the BIG EAST Championships Committee and BIG EAST Women's Basketball Task Force. Meehan previously served on the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Championship Committee (2010-15) and the NCAA Division I Recruiting and Athletics Personnel Cabinet. She was also the University's representative for the Metropolitan Intercollegiate Basketball Association from 2001-05.
Meehan and her husband, Lou, live in Jackson Heights, N.Y., and have two sons, Brian and Timothy, and have five grandchildren.
