Red Storm Drops Two Matches on Day One at Stephen F. Austin

St. John’s falls to Stetson and host Ladyjacks in Nacogdoches
The Red Storm volleyball team finished 0-2 on the first day of The Fredonia Hotel/Holiday Inn Express SFA Invitational. The Johnnies fell in five sets to Stetson before falling Stephen F. Austin in three sets in the nightcap.
St. John's started strong against the Hatters taking the first set 25-22. Nia Diaz posted four kills in the set and paced the offense with 14 kills in the five sets, which tied her career high from earlier this year. The redshirt junior hit .444 in the match to lead the Johnnies.
The Hatters took a competitive second set 25-23. The Red Storm fell behind 6-3 before an 8-4 run gave St. John's an 11-10 lead. Diaz and Hanna Wagner combined for nine kills in the frame and Erica Di Maulo delivered 13 assists. With the set tied at 22-22, Stetson took three of the final four points to take the set.
The Hatters also took set three 25-11 with the Red Storm posting a clip of -.208 to lead to a must-win fourth set. St. John's hit .317 in the fourth with six different Johnnies recording multiple kills in the frame. Jordan McCalla had four of her 10 kills in the set while playing in her home state of Texas.
In the deciding fifth set, St. John's took an early 6-2 lead behind four kills in that span by Efrosini Alexakou. The newcomer recorded a career-high nine kills in her second collegiate match and posted six of them in the final frame. The Red Storm would lead 12-9 before a 6-1 run by Stetson gave them the victory.
In the second match against Stephen F. Austin, the Red Storm failed to find its rhythm in a true road game against the Ladyjacks. Despite outhitting the host school, St. John's fell in the first set 25-22. With the Johnnies trailing 14-12, Lexie Lobdell posted three consecutive kills to tie the frame. With the score tied at 19-19, Stephen F. Austin finished with a 6-3 run to win the frame.
The Ladyjacks also closed out the second set with a 7-1 run after the Red Storm pulled to within one at 18-17. McCalla added five of her team-leading 11 kills in the match in set two. Stephen F. Austin controlled the third set from the start scoring 19 of the first 25 points. Yanjiao Zhao entered in the third set and delivered five assists as the host school won 25-11 to take the match 3-0.
The Red Storm will finish the event tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. against Tennessee State.
