Oluwaseyi nabs his first career BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week award
QUEENS, N.Y. (Oct. 7, 2019) – After leading the Red Storm to its third straight win to kick off conference play, Tani Oluwaseyi and Rafael Bustamante were honored by the BIG EAST for their efforts on Monday afternoon. Oluwaseyi was named the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week for the first time in his career while Bustamante garnered a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll.
Â
Oluwaseyi, a member of the 2018 BIG EAST All-Freshman Team, earns his first weekly award from the conference after tallying his first career brace on Friday night in a 4-0 win against Marquette. The sophomore from Mississauga, Ont., provided a pair of second-half insurance goals, allowing the Red Storm to cruise to a 4-0 win, its largest margin of victory in a BIG EAST game since 2013.
Â
Oluwaseyi now leads both the team and the conference with six goals on the season. He is also tied for the highest single-season output by a St. John's player since the College Cup campaign of 2008.
Â
Bustamante, who won BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week accolades last Monday, earns this weekly recognition after supplying an offensive spark for the Johnnies on Friday night in Milwaukee. In addition to helping the Red Storm record its sixth shutout of the season, Bustamante scored the game-winner in the 35th, blasting a left-footed shot into the upper-left corner of the cage. The goal marked the first of Bustamante's St. John's career.Â
Â
Bustamante is one of just four players on the Red Storm roster to record more than 800 minutes of action in the team's first 10 games.
Â
The Red Storm will return to action tomorrow evening, hosting Temple for the team's non-conference finale at Belson Stadium. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN3.
