Former St. John’s hurler joins the Minnesota Twins for series against the Yankees
QUEENS, N.Y. (July 23, 2019) – Following a brief, yet exceptional stint in Triple-A Rochester, former St. John's right-hander Cody Stashak has earned his first Major League call-up with the Minnesota Twins. The organization officially announced the move yesterday afternoon.
Stashak, who pitched for one year at St. John's in 2015, has been nearly untouchable this season between Double-A Pensacola and Triple-A Rochester. In Pensacola, Stashak was a perfect 4-for-4 in save opportunities, striking out 40 and walking just five in 28.1 innings of work.
Since earning his promotion to the Red Wings in early June, Stashak is 5-0 with a 1.61 ERA in 12 appearances. Over 22.1 frames of action, Stashak has punched out 31 batters while surrendering just four walks. Opponents are hitting just .193 off Stashak, who boasts a WHIP of 0.90.
Stashak, who was available for last night's win over the Yankees but did not make an appearance, was a vital part of the 2015 Red Storm squad that won the BIG EAST's regular season and tournament titles. He went 7-4 with a 3.57 ERA in 16 appearances, all of which were starts. Following that season, in which the Red Storm went 41-16 and reached the finals of the Stillwater Regional, the Cumberland County College transfer became the first Johnnie selected in the 2015 MLB Draft, going in the 13th round (380th overall) to Minnesota. A record-tying six St. John's players were drafted following the 2015 campaign.
Stashak is the fourth St. John's product to earn a spot on an MLB roster this season joining Joe Panik, Matt Carasiti and Frank Schwindel.
