QUEENS, N.Y. (Jan. 22, 2020) – St. John's senior Mike Madsen was named to the 2020 BIG EAST Preseason Team, as announced by the conference on Wednesday. The Locust Valley, N.Y. native is now the second Red Storm midfielder to be named to the All-BIG EAST Preseason Team in program history.
Madsen is coming off a stellar junior season where he led St. John's with 22 assists and 47 points. The Locust Valley, N.Y. native scored a career-high 25 goals and recorded five games with three or more tallies, earning him a place on last year's BIG EAST Second Team.
"Mike [Madsen] sets the tone for our team. Full speed is the only speed he knows," said hHad Coach Jason Miller. "He's a huge part of everything we do."
Madsen earned an appearance on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll after scoring a team-high four goals against No. 12 Rutgers in the 2019 season opener. The senior also recorded a four-goal performance in St. John's come-from-behind victory over UMass Lowell and dished a season-high five assists in a winning effort over Dartmouth.
Madsen was the lone Johnnie picked for preseason awards, joining selections from conference foes Denver, Georgetown, Providence and Villanova. Denver and Georgetown are ranked No. 10 and 16 respectively in Inside Lacrosse's preseason rankings.
St. John's finished sixth in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll, as Denver, Villanova, Georgetown, Providence and Marquette were slotted ahead of the Red Storm.
