Former Penn State midfielder joins Red Storm coaching staff ahead of 2026 season
QUEENS, N.Y. — St. John's Lacrosse Head Coach Justin Turri announced the addition of Assistant Coach Trey Berry on Thursday afternoon.
Berry arrives in Queens after his collegiate career at Penn State, where he competed as a midfielder under one of the most decorated collegiate lacrosse coaches, Jeff Tambroni from 2021-23. A Long Island native with deep lacrosse roots, Berry is set to bring a strong blend of playing experience, leadership, and passion for player development to the Red Storm sideline.
"Trey [Berry] comes to St. John's having impacted championship programs at the high school and college level as a player, in addition to his college football experience at Stony Brook. His desire to compete, coach, and impact the lives of our young men was immediately noticeable in our hiring process." said Turri. "He has hit the ground running and brings great energy to our full team, while also working closely with our rope unit. He is the perfect addition to compete our staff heading into the spring season."
At Penn State, Berry appeared in three games during the 2023 season following two developmental years in one of the nation's top programs. Before his time in Happy Valley, Berry was a standout at Ward Melville High School, where he served as a team captain and helped guide the Patriots to two New York State Championships and three Suffolk County titles. The 2018 squad reached a No. 1 national ranking by Inside Lacrosse.
A proven multi-sport athlete, Berry also excelled as the starting quarterback for Ward Melville's football team, earning All-County, All-Long Island, and All-State honors. Prior to playing at lacrosse at Penn State he spent one year on the Stony Brook football roster in 2019 and was named to the CAA Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll.
Berry comes from a strong family legacy of collegiate athletics. His father, Art, played lacrosse for the Nittany Lions, while his mother, Nicole, played field hockey at Radford. His sister, Shannon, also played collegiate lacrosse at Princeton.
Originally from Setauket, N.Y., Berry earned his bachelor's degree in communication arts and sciences from Penn State.
