Play stopped at halftime of the St. John’s-Creighton Quarterfinal
NEW YORK – The BIG EAST Conference announced that the remainder of the league's men's basketball tournament has been canceled.
The stoppage came at halftime of the Red Storm's quarterfinal matchup against top-seeded Creighton, a game that the Johnnies led by three, 38-35, at halftime.
"This is a situation that I have never experienced before and I know our team has never experienced it," said Head Coach Mike Anderson. "Our guys are very disappointed. We feel like we've been playing some of our better basketball, but at the same time this is bigger than basketball with this coronavirus. This has a worldwide effect and that's a game of life.
"I'm glad to see our leadership made the decision to cancel the tournament. Again, we were disappointed but at the same time it's the right thing to do. I'm just proud of our guys, the fans that came out and supported us."
The game did not result in a win or loss and the stats will not count toward any career totals for the student-athletes.
