QUEENS, N.Y. (May 12, 2020) – Four St. John's athletic teams have received Division I Academic Progress Rate (APR) Public Recognition Awards from the NCAA in an announcement made this afternoon.
The four squads honored by the NCAA for finishing in the top 10 percent of their respective sports are women's golf, women's fencing, women's track & field and women's cross country. The most recent APRs are multi-year rates based on scores from the 2015-16, 2016-17, 2017-18, and 2018-19 academic years.
Women's golf and women's track & field both earned Public Recognition Honors for the third-consecutive time, while women's cross country earned its second in as many years. Women's fencing reached the list for the first time since the 2013-14 academic year. The Red Storm women's golf program registered a perfect APR score for the ninth-straight year, the longest such streak of any team in St. John's history.
The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation, as well as providing a measure of each team's academic performance.
As a result of an increase in perfect scores, teams earning Public Recognition Awards increased to 1,380, up by 52 from the previous academic year. APRs for programs in the top 10 percent ranged from 987 to a perfect 1,000, and the number of teams posting perfect scores increased to 1,266, marking an improvement of 52 teams from last year.
APR scores for all Division I teams will be released May 19. The APR measures eligibility, graduation and retention each semester or academic term and provides a clear picture of the ongoing academic performance for each team in every sport.
